Easy Project Video Tutorial :: Linen Pouch with French Seams
French seams, so what are they. Encased seams, with no loose threads from the fabric fraying or over locking serger threads. This is a beautiful finish, with a really polished look to your finished piece.
What you’ll need to make this pouch.
- SEWING MACHINE straight stitch
- FABRIC 32cm x 15cm – lightweight linen (beginners – cotton is easier)
- NARROW RIBBON 36cm long (beginners – cotton herringbone tape is easiest to use, 0.5cm or 1cm)
- THREAD contrasting or matching the ribbon (beginners – thread that’s the same colour as your fabric is best at covering any little mistakes)

Vintage Sewing Machine :: The Perfect Project
French seams are perfect for the vintage sewing machine that only does straight stitch. So many patterns require zig zag finishing, and this is a brilliant alternative that’s quicker and gives a beautiful finish, the French seams.
Sewing on a vintage sewing machine, with only straight stitch, is an opportunity to hone your skills, learn traditional ways of sewing and finishing.
If you have used or own a vintage sewing machine, have you noticed that the stitches very neat when it’s oiled and flowing. The Singer 201k that I use, feels smooth, and is super fast. If you haven’t used one, try it out when you get an opportunity.
Drawbacks, when sewing short lengths the manual nature of resetting the position of the needle, snipping the threads with scissors – it does take a little longer than the automated machines.
For me, the benefits far outweigh any drawbacks. Vintage is a real joy.
